Wine Making Kits
Not everyone has a row of vines or a crusher out the back, and you do not need either to make wine worth drinking. A kit gives you concentrated juice already balanced for acid and sugar, along with the yeast and additions, so your job is fermenting, clearing and bottling rather than chasing fruit at harvest.
Our kits are WineExpert, and they come in two tiers. Classic is the everyday range and covers a lot of ground: Italian Sangiovese style and Pinot Grigio, Spanish Tempranillo, Chilean Merlot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Diablo Rojo, plus Californian Shiraz, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir style. There is an Australian Grenache Shiraz Mouvedre in there as well. Private Reserve steps things up, with a California Dry Creek Chardonnay, a Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon and an Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc, and there is a Reserve Australian Shiraz alongside them. If it is your first go, start with a red from the Classic range. Reds are more forgiving of the small temperature swings a garage throws at you than a delicate white is.
The tip we always give: do not rush the clearing. Wine tastes thin and unfinished if you bottle it the week fermentation stops. Give it the time the instructions ask for, and give it a bit longer if it is still hazy held up to the light.
Pop into Laverton North or Epping if you want a hand choosing. Also see wine making, wine yeasts and nutrients and glass demijohns, jars and carboys.

The gear we’d put together for anyone making their first white. Everything here is something we sell on its own and use ourselves, bundled so you’re not standing in the aisle wondering what you’ve forgotten.
A 20 L batch fills around 24 to 26 standard 750 ml bottles once the wine is racked off its sediment. That’s enough to learn the process without committing a whole garage to it.
Not included
- Grapes or juice
- Wine bottles. See our wine bottles.
- A crusher and press, if you’re starting from whole grapes.
How it works
- Clean and sanitise the demijohn, airlock and syphon with a metabisulphite solution.
- Fill and pitch. For white wine, the grapes are crushed and pressed first, so only the juice goes into the demijohn. Add the nutrient and yeast following the directions on each pack. Take a hydrometer reading before fermentation starts.
- Ferment with the airlock fitted. Keep the demijohn somewhere cool with a steady temperature.
- Check it’s finished. When the hydrometer reading stops changing over a few days, fermentation is done.
- Rack the wine off the sediment with the syphon, and let it clear. Don’t rush this. Wine bottled too early tastes thin.
- Bottle and cork. Fill your bottles, drive the corks home with the hand corker, and give it time.
New to it? Read our step-by-step wine making guide, or pop into Laverton North or Epping and we’ll walk you through it.
