For sauce day and general preserving, the Round Glass Jar Standard is the workhorse. The Orto and Orcio shapes are the traditional Italian profiles if you like the look on a shelf, and there is a Square Glass Jar as well. Bormioli Rocco in Italy make the two most people know, the Quattro Stagioni jar with its own Metal Cap Lid, and the FIDO preserving jar with a hermetic clip lid that needs no separate closure at all. Lids come in white, black, gold, and red with a gold ring, plus the white cap with the tomato logo and the gold Casalinghe print for anyone doing passata properly. There is also an agglomerated cork for jars and a 38mm silver metal cap for 2L flagons.
Bring your jar into the shop, or at least measure across the top of the opening in millimetres before you order lids. Jar mouths vary more than people expect, and a lid that is two millimetres out is no lid at all.
