Glass Demijohns, Jars & Carboys

A glass demijohn bottle is still the simplest way to ferment and age a small batch. Glass does not hold flavour, does not scratch, and lets you see exactly what the wine is doing without opening anything.

We stock narrow neck and wide neck demijohns in PVC basket and heavy weaved basket, with or without a tap. Narrow neck is the traditional choice for wine because it exposes less surface to air. Wide neck is easier to clean and better if you are working with fruit or olives. The versions with a tap fitted save decanting entirely, which is worth the extra when you are drawing off a glass at a time.

Gallon jars come with either a swing clip closure or a screw closure, and we carry the 35mm metal screw caps and demijohn caps separately so you are not replacing a whole jar over a perished seal. The white and black metal jar lids, the tomato logo caps and the Bormioli Quattro Stagioni lids are all here for preserving as well.

An Italian red plastic funnel with a reducer makes filling one a great deal less messy. You will also want an airlock and bung and something to move the wine with from transfer hose and syphons.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a narrow neck or wide neck demijohn?

Narrow neck is the traditional choice for wine because less of the surface is exposed to air. Wide neck is easier to clean and better if you are fermenting fruit or preserving olives.

What size demijohn do I need?

We stock demijohns from 5 L up to 54 L. A 5 L demijohn is good for small test batches of wine, mead or cider. Larger sizes suit a full wine batch or ageing after the first ferment.

Which bung or cap fits my demijohn?

Neck sizes vary between demijohns, so measure across the inside of the opening, or bring the demijohn into Laverton North or Epping and we will match it. We stock demijohn caps, airlock caps for 10 to 34 L demijohns, and silicone bungs in a range of sizes.

What is the difference between a demijohn and a carboy?

They are the same idea: a large glass vessel for fermenting and storing. Demijohn is the traditional name, often for Italian glass in a protective basket, while carboy is the more common term in English-speaking brewing.
