Rum Essences

Rum essence is the quickest way from a plain neutral spirit to a dark navy rum, a golden Queensland style or a spiced rum for summer. Here are all our rum essences in one place.

Dark rum. Still Spirits Top Shelf Navy Dark Rum, Calypso Dark Rum, Jamaican Dark Rum and Dark Spiced Rum, the Classic Dark Jamaican Rum, and Samuel Willards Smooth Dark Rum and Queenslander Dark Rum.

Gold and spiced rum. Still Spirits Queensland Gold, Australian Gold, Jamaican Gold and Spiced Gold Rum, Samuel Willards Gold Star Queensland Rum, Trinidad Rum and Rum Oak, and Pure Distilling Aussie Rum and Molasses Rum.

White rum. Still Spirits Jamaican White Rum and Original White Rum flavouring, Samuel Willards Gold Star White Rum, Pure Distilling White Rum and Prestige White Baccara.

Rum liqueurs. Samuel Willards premixes in Coconut Rum and Chocolate Rum, and the Still Spirits Top Shelf Coconut Rum liqueur.

No still needed: blend with a plain vodka from the bottle shop at the rate on the label and let it rest for a week or two. Samuel Willards rum soakers add oak if you want a more aged character.

How do I make rum with an essence?

Add the rum essence to a neutral spirit, such as a plain vodka from the bottle shop, at the rate on the label. Shake well and give it a week or two to settle before you judge it. Our guide to blending spirits and liqueurs explains the basics.

Dark, gold or white rum essence: what is the difference?

White rum essences give a clean, light rum for mixing. Gold rum essences add colour and more caramel and molasses character. Dark and navy rum essences are the richest, with deeper molasses and spice. Each listing describes its own flavour.

Can I age rum made with an essence?

You can add oak character. Samuel Willards rum soakers or oak chips add colour and woody depth over a few days to a few weeks. Taste as you go and remove the oak when you are happy. See ageing spirits with oak.
