Silicone Bungs, Cork Stopper

Bungs and stoppers are the cheapest part of a batch and the one that decides whether it survives. A perished bung lets air in slowly enough that you will not notice until you taste it.

Silicone and rubber bungs come bored and solid. Bored takes an airlock for anything still fermenting, solid seals a vessel that has finished. Silicone lasts longer and does not go hard the way rubber does, which matters if a demijohn sits for a year.

For finishing, we stock natural cork stoppers with wood heads at 19 x 28mm, beige cork stoppers, synthetic stoppers at 22 x 28mm, plastic expandcork at 19mm, and black plastic flat top port stoppers for fortifieds. A large rough top tapered cork at 110mm base suits a wide neck demijohn or a jar.

Wood bungs from 12 to 17mm are the traditional option for barrels, and there is a rubber grommet for brew fermenter lids and a plastic sediment racking plate for hosing.

Two things worth doing. Measure the neck rather than eyeballing it, because a stopper that almost fits is a batch that spoils slowly. And replace bungs on a schedule rather than when they fail, since they cost a couple of dollars and a demijohn of wine does not.

Bring the vessel in if you are unsure. See also airlocks, corks and capsules and demijohns.
