A wash that goes into the still cloudy carries yeast, protein and off flavours with it, and no amount of care later fully undoes that. Clearing and carbon treatment is the housekeeping step beforehand. Drop the solids out, strip the compounds you do not want, then run a clean liquid.
Clearing agents come as two part finings you stir in and leave overnight. Still Spirits Turbo Clear liquid satchet 130g and Alcotec Turbo Klar are the familiar ones for a standard wash. Crystal Clear Wash Clarifier by Pure Distilling is sized for 25L, which suits anyone running full fermenter batches rather than small trials. Carbon works differently, binding unwanted flavour compounds so you can filter them off. Still Spirits Turbo Carbon 140g goes into the wash, while Spirit Enhancer Liquid Carbon by Pure Distilling is used on the other side of the run. Still Spirits 25mm Filter Paper in a 5 pack handles the filtering itself.
The thing people rush is settling time. Give the wash a full day cold and undisturbed after finings, then rack carefully off the sediment rather than tipping the lot in. You lose a little volume and gain a much cleaner result.
