Harvest is the week that decides your oil. Olives bruise easily, and fruit that hits bare ground or sits in a pile picks up damage that shows in the press. Nets and rakes are about getting fruit off the tree quickly and cleanly, then to the mill before it starts working against you.
Nets first. The heavy duty edged olive net at 12 by 6 metres goes under the canopy and catches everything, and the edging is what stops it fraying after a season or two. For rakes, the choice is really about how many trees you have. The Italian hand held rake is fine for a few backyard trees and costs almost nothing to keep. Once you are past that, the powered rakes earn their keep. Zanon make the Olivar electric at 3.0 metres and the Karbonium range, including the AL200 electric on a 2.0 metre telescopic pole and a 3.0 metre telescopic version. The Holly tool comes with a 1.7 metre pole and a 10 metre battery cable, and Alice extends from 2.4 to 3 metres. There is also the Campagnola Cobra Pro electric pruning kit for the work you do afterwards. Italian ICS red crates at 40 litres come with solid or perforated walls and bases, and perforated is what you want for fruit that needs air.
