Transfer Hose, Syphons & Clamps

Racking is where a lot of good wine and beer gets ruined. Splash it about, drag the lees across with it, and months of patience go out the window. The right hose and a clamp that actually holds are cheap insurance.

Start with the internal diameter, because everything else follows from it. Thin wall vinyl hose is fine for gravity siphoning small batches. Thick wall vinyl and the hose with polyester yarn reinforcement hold their shape under a pump and will not collapse around a corner, which matters once you are moving volume. Silicone hose from Keg King handles heat. For a straightforward setup the Ferrari Syphon Kit Eco is 2m of wine transfer hose at 10mm internal diameter, and the large telescopic tube blow siphon saves you starting a siphon by mouth. Add a red plastic racking plate to keep the inlet off the sediment, a throttle flow stop valve so you can pause mid transfer, and a clamp to match: Tridon stainless, Tridon zinc and part stainless, the Fratelli Marchisio light worm drive at 8 to 15mm, or zinc eco clamps in packs of 20.

Buy hose a metre longer than you think you need. Every setup grows, and short hose is the thing you end up swearing at.
