Malt Grains - Cracked
Cracked malt is sold here in 100g lots for one simple reason: most of the time you only need a handful. A steep of crystal in an extract brew, a bit of roasted malt to darken a stout, or 100g of something you have never used just to see what it does.
Because it is already milled you need no mill and no setup. Open the bag, weigh it, steep it. That convenience costs you shelf life. Once the husk is broken the malt starts giving up aroma, so buy cracked for the brew in front of you rather than for the cupboard.
For base malt in small amounts there is Coopers pale malt, Briess 2 Row and pale ale malt, Joe White pilsner and traditional ale malt, and Maris Otter pale ale malt from Simpson if you are after an English character. For colour and body, look at caramalt crystal, crystal malt, wheat crystal and roasted malt. Golden Naked Oats from Simpson bring a soft sweetness that suits a hazy or an oatmeal stout, Weyermann wheat malt and Vienna malt shift the base, and Kegland corn maize grits lighten a lager. Rice hulls come in 100g here too.
If you find yourself buying the same malt in 100g lots every single brew, it is time to move to uncracked malt grains and a mill.
Drop into Laverton North or Epping, or see brew extract kits and beer brewing ingredients.

Combine the Rice Hulls at the start of your mash. Stirring as needed. Usage Rate 5% for an average grain bill Up to 25% where necessary

Red X is a very popular grain base malt that is used to produce amazing red and red-coloured beers (ales, wheat beers, dark beers with a red tinge and many others), thanks to its particular hues. It can be used by itself in the grain bill, thanks to its great reliability and processability. To retain the red color in stronger beers, some brewers also add Pilsen Malt to the grain bill due to the higher wort gravity.
It is designed for a 12°P beer.
EBC value: 28-32
Min buy: 1kg (10 x 100g units)
Red X Malt is also very popular to produce whisky: it creates an intense colour and exceptional fruity and sherry flavours.
Base Malts make up the largest proportion of grain in your beer and must be mashed. They generally have high diastatic power, meaning a high sugar conversion rate. They are often named according to the beer style they lend themselves to or the area in which they are famously from.
