Malt & Grains (cracked + uncracked)
Grain is where the beer actually comes from. Colour, body, the biscuit note in an amber, the roast in a stout, all of it is decided here before the yeast gets a look in. We sell malt cracked or uncracked, in 100 g lots for when you only need a handful of speciality grain and in sacks for when you are brewing properly.
Base malt is the bulk of any mash. Coopers Pale Malt Premium comes as a 25 kg sack, and Pale Ale Malt Grain and Pilsner Malt Grain are on the shelf in 100 g if you are topping up or trialling a recipe. Briess Bavarian Wheat Malt Dry and Weyermann Wheat Malt 100 g cover the wheat side. For colour and character, Joe White Caramalt Crystal Malt, Crystal Malt 100 g and Chocolate Malt Grain Uncracked do the work. Blue Lake Milling Rolled Wheat and Rolled Rye add body and head. If you want it simpler, the Bintani Dark Malt Mix, the Morgans Brew Cellar Ultra Blend 1 kg and our own 1 kg Light Malt Mix Brew Enhancer are already blended.
The tip: if you are mashing much wheat or rye, put Rice Hulls in with it. They do nothing at all to the flavour and everything to stop a stuck sparge.
We crack grain in store at Laverton North and Epping. See also brewing ingredients, hops and brewing yeast.

Munich malt from Joe White Maltings, supplied uncracked. A malt with plenty of character, used as part of the grain bill where you want more malt depth than a plain base grain gives you. Left whole so it keeps better on the shelf. We can run it through the mill for you if you have not got one at home.
From $5.20 AUD
Melanoidin malt from Best Malz in Germany, supplied uncracked. A specialty malt used as part of a grain bill rather than as a base. Supplied whole, which keeps it in better condition in the bag. The listing carries a Weyermann vendor tag as well, so give us a call if you need the maltster confirmed before ordering.
From $6.50 AUD
Maris Otter pale ale malt from Simpsons Malts, supplied uncracked. A well known English base malt and the usual starting point for bitters, milds and English style ales. Supplied whole so it keeps well between brews. We can crack it for you before it leaves Laverton North or Epping if that suits you better than milling at home.
Wheat pale malt from Weyermann in Germany. A wheat malt used as part of the grain bill in hefeweizen, witbier and other wheat styles rather than as the whole bill. Supplied uncracked so it holds in the bag until you are ready to mill it. Our grain cracking service can take care of that when you place the order.
From $6.20 AUD
Traditional ale malt from Joe White Maltings, supplied uncracked. A base malt for ale brewing, so it makes up the bulk of the grain bill rather than a small specialty addition. Buying it whole keeps it fresher in storage between brews. We can crack it for you at the counter if you would rather not mill at home.
From $7.90 AUD
Red X ale malt from Best Maltz in Germany, supplied uncracked. A German malt used to build red and amber colour in the finished beer. Supplied whole as grain for an all grain mash. $0.59 AUD
Devils Pilsner distiller malt from Joe White Maltings, sold uncracked and listed under our bulk buys in 100g units.
Note the web address for this page says pale while the title says pilsner, so the listing is not consistent with itself. Confirm the malt you are after with us before ordering, particularly if you are working to a recipe.
Golden Naked Oats from Simpsons Malts, supplied uncracked. An oat grain used as part of a wider grain bill rather than on its own. Supplied whole so it keeps in the bag until brew day. Add the grain cracking service to your order and we will mill it before it leaves, or take it as it comes.
From $0.59 AUD
Flaked barley from Blue Lake Milling, supplied ready flaked. Used as part of a grain bill alongside your base malt rather than on its own. It is listed here under our bulk buys, so check the pack size before you order and we will sort out the quantity that actually suits your batch. Also available from Laverton North and Epping.
From $5.90 AUD
Crystal dark malt from Joe White Maltings, supplied uncracked. A darker crystal malt used in small additions where you are after colour and a fuller malt character. Supplied whole so it keeps in the bag between brews. Ask us to crack it along with the rest of your grain order if you do not mill at home.
From $6.50 AUD
Amber malt from Joe White Maltings, supplied uncracked. A kilned specialty malt used in smaller proportions to lift the colour and add a toasty note to the grain bill. Supplied whole, so crack it close to brew day and it will hold its character. Available at Laverton North and Epping if you would rather pick it up than have it posted.
German acidulated malt, supplied uncracked. A specialty malt used in small proportions as part of a wider grain bill rather than on its own. Supplied whole so it holds well in storage between brews. If you would rather not mill at home, add the grain cracking service and we will run it through before it goes out the door.
$135.00 AUD
From $7.90 AUD

BEST Heidelberg is a malt made from special, two-row malting barley varieties that are less prone to coloring during the malting process. BEST Heidelberger is particularly suitable for the production of especially light beers. The protein content of the malt is usually somewhat lower than that of a classic Pilsener malt from the corresponding harvest, but it has high extract values and very active enzymes.

Red X is a very popular grain base malt that is used to produce amazing red and red-coloured beers (ales, wheat beers, dark beers with a red tinge and many others), thanks to its particular hues. It can be used by itself in the grain bill, thanks to its great reliability and processability. To retain the red color in stronger beers, some brewers also add Pilsen Malt to the grain bill due to the higher wort gravity.
It is designed for a 12°P beer.
EBC value: 28-32
Min buy: 1kg (10 x 100g units)
Red X Malt is also very popular to produce whisky: it creates an intense colour and exceptional fruity and sherry flavours.
Base Malts make up the largest proportion of grain in your beer and must be mashed. They generally have high diastatic power, meaning a high sugar conversion rate. They are often named according to the beer style they lend themselves to or the area in which they are famously from.
