Cider, Ginger Beer & Kombucha

Not everything worth fermenting is beer. Cider, ginger beer and kombucha all sit at the friendlier end of the craft. The ferments are short, the gear is simple, and the results please people who would never sit down with a heavy stout. They are also the easiest way to bring someone in the house who is curious but not yet convinced.

Cider is the quickest way in. The Mangrove Jacks Craft Series pouches cover Apple, Pear, Raspberry and Lime, Strawberry and Pear, Mango and Raspberry, and Elderflower and Lime, and the Basic Cider Brewing Starter Kit by Mangrove Jacks gives you the fermenter and the fittings alongside it. Coopers Apple Cider 500g is the simpler tin option. For ginger beer, choose by scale. Coopers Ginger Beer 500g and the Morgans Ginger Beer Pouch suit a normal batch, while the Colony West Smooth Ginger Beer kit makes 23 litres. Morgans Ginger Beer Yeast and the Mad Millie Ginger Beer and Ale Yeast three pack keep you stocked. Kombucha runs differently again, and the Mad Millie Kombucha Making Kit 1L is the tidy starting point.

One thing to watch. These drinks carry residual sugar, so they keep fermenting in the bottle. Chill them once they are lively and check a plastic tester bottle by squeezing it, rather than finding out the hard way in the cupboard.

Go deeper in cider concentrate kits, ginger beer and kombucha and pop drinks, or sort your vessel in fermenters and accessories. Laverton North and Epping both carry the lot.
